St. Charles Community College will host a series of events to celebrate Pride Month Oct. 1-10, including guest speaker Zach Wahls, an appearance by the “Fagbug,” and a webisode screening of “50 Faggots.” All events are free and open to the public and will take place on the SCC campus.
Kicking off the month of events, the Fagbug will be on display from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, on the Campus Plaza. The documentary about the Fagbug and a Q&A with owner Erin Davies will follow that evening at 7 p.m. in the Private Dining Room of the Student Center. The Fagbug was created after it was vandalized in 2007 with the words “fag” and “u r gay.” The owner, Erin Davies, decided to embrace it rather than fix it, and documented a 58-day trip around the United States and Canada with the Fagbug. She has since given the car a makeover and now tours the country with her rainbow-painted VW Beetle.
The next day, Zach Wahls, an Internet sensation turned LGBT activist, will host a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building. Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa engineering student, had no idea that his heartfelt testimony about being the son of two lesbian mothers would spread like viral wildfire. The video of his testimony at a public hearing in Iowa has since landed him on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and as a speaker at the Democratic National Convention.
Rounding out the Pride Month events will be a visit from the director and an actor of the online documentary series, “50 Faggots,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. Director Randall Jenson and Season 1 cast member Aaron Gray will host a webisode screening and a follow-up Q&A. “50 Faggots” educates audiences on how individual homosexual men from all over the country go about their daily lives.
